Well I finally found a 302 for a good price for my '89 E150. It's a '92 to '93 N code roller cam remanufactured long block. My questions are was '93 still speed density and does any one know of any problems putting this in the '89. I was going to put a Comp Cams speed density cam in it but that's a flat roller cam. Any ideas on what cam I should go with now.
It should be speed density, if your unsure just swap your efi over to the new motor, take note of the rollers firing order, the HO motors use the ho/351w firing order. Give comp cams a call directly, they will recommend the right cam for you. If the new motor doesn't have a distributor you'll need to get one for a roller cammed engine, your cast iron distributor gear that came in the flat tappet motor won't work too well. Also keep in mind if you do get a cam from comp cams, be sure to ask what firing order to use, they could possibly give you a cam that has the 302 firing order even though the motor is an HO, it just a matter of firing order. This is not a HO motor. This is a '92 to '93 N code truck or van motor. I believe the HO was a T,E code. This is supposed to be a Ford replacement long block, won't be here till friday. I will be putting everything from the '89 on this. What is the difference in the distributor drive gears?
Thats interesting, I didn't know they put roller cams in the 92-93 trucks, live and learn. Did a quick search and seems they put roller cams in the 92-96 302 trucks but the 92-93 used the 302 firing order, so your right, they didn't use the HO firing order until late 94 and up.
The cam gear needs to be compatible, the flat tappet cast iron gear will chew right through your roller cam gear. You need a bronze, actually if your thinking of getting a new cam, then ask the manufacturer, some companies are offering the new roller cams with compatible gears for the stock cast iron distributor gears.

Thanks for the info. Will call Comp when it arrives. I was surprised at the roller thing too. It was the same price as the flat tappet engine so I fiqured I would take a chance on everything switching over.
