I have a '55 F-600 or F-700 can't remember for sure, with a 317 in it. The engine runs awesome and we are looking at parting out this truck. Just wondering if there was any value to these old trucks or not. I think I'd like to keep the engine myself and run it in something someday, but know nothing about these engines at all. So lets hear the low-down on this engine.
Probably most of us here don't know too much about the Lincoln Y-blocks. If someone doesn't come forward you might try y-blocksforever.com . There have been a few postings and replys there about the Lincoln Y's in the past.
I just looked at John Mummert's website. He has a brief kind of history there on the Lincoln Y's. By looking at the small parts offerings he has on the Lincolns, they may be very hard to come by, but you should talk to him about that. I did learn something.
The Lincoln Y's were Ford's first overhead valve engine, coming out in 1952. I had thought they came out at the same time as the 239, 256, 272... Y's, in 1954.
My grandpa bought this truck in '57, it was the newest piece of equipment that he had. IT has been garaged almost every single day of its lift, and it needs to go down the road now. My dad hates to get rid of it, but it is too outdated for our farming operation, and all it does is take up shop space. I know the mechanical fuel pump went out of it a few years back, couldn't find a replacement, so we put in an electric pump (6 volt) and that quit working. Eventually we located a NOS mechanical pump and she works great. I know it took 3-4 months to find that pump though. So I do believe you when you say parts may be hard to find.
You can get parts, they are just harder to come by. I had/have a truck with the 279 (seized on me) and I was able to find things, just took a little longer. Fuel pump was pretty easy, there's a guy on Long Island who rebuilds them...
If you're really going to part it out, I would interested in the 317....

It's going to be hard finding parts! But one thing i have learned is that sometimes people look so hard, that they can't find it and it can be under their nose. For example, i found the front and rear window for my 1959 Cadillac, and no one had a intake manifold for it, because i wanted a 4bbl instead of the 3 dueces it had, and i found a 4bbl intake off of a 1960 cadillac and it mounts on the same 390 the 59 Caddy came with and auto zone actually had the carburetor and the generator. I say, if you like it, make it work...But it will be a toughy on parts dear. It's a shame you can't restore that pickup that it's in, are you sure the pickup can't be restored???......Janet
I left out something,....I would restore the truck, do you have any idea how darned beautiful a 55-56 Ford pickup is in RED!!!!! Ye Haw.............Janet
