i replaced my fuel filter on my 2000 4x4 4.0 today. i have heard stories on everyone fighting the lines, so i invested in the line release tools. when i got under the truck, i popped out the little white clips all the way, and the fuel lines came out. i didn't have to use the tool. is this normal? the only one that fought me was the larger line with no clip on it. a little wiggle and it came out. i guess i'm just concerned at how easily the lines came off - without the white clip, there was NO resistance. At 40K, i assume this was the original filter.
The internal lock clips may be rusted or bent and not holding, not a problem if you have the plastic clips in place. I would check it once in a while for leaks or seapage.
I dont know of any other than replacing the lines.Mine were a little loose,so I took a Small screwdriver and bent the little metal tabs that are inside the lines, then they locked securely.
I think I recall a similar post by someone with a '00 Ranger who also said he had no problems disconnecting the fuel lines from the filter on his truck.
I don't need a special tool to change out the fuel filters on my other Fords, either.
I've got those little white clips and they have been just fine for 171,700 miles and 9+ years. They are designed to lock when installed and can be easily removed with a small straight blade screwdriver. Nothing to worry about provided you inserted them in all the way when the filter was replaced. As for my fuel lines, they have virtually no resistance to sliding off when the clips are removed. I never looked in the fuel lines, but I suspect there might be an o-ring in there to provide a positive seal when fuel pressure is applied.
