ATS Turbo?
I am looking at a truck, a 1990, with a 7.3 turbo, that was obviously added. The top of the motor says ATS turbo. Is this aftermarket, and if so, is it any good? Also, is a diesel supposed to blow smoke under hard acceleration? Please advise ASAP - looking to buy this truck!

as far as I know the ATS is the one used by Ford although the motors in that year were not turboed.
as for the pushing smoke under load yes they will... it is unburnt fuel as far as I know that you are seeing...

If the mechanical pump is turned up a little yes it will blow smoke under hard acceleration even a stock motor will blow smoke, as to the turbo, the ATS is a fine unit mid to upper range performance where as i have heard the Banks is more off the line to high mid range where the wastegate opens. Five speed or auto, good truck either way interms of the motor no electric injectors like the newer PSD's less to deal with. Good luck hope this helps
