ats turbos

i think my buddies dad is running an ats something or other, he has all kinds of stuff attached to that thing. the trans pan looks like a foot locker attached to the bottom of the rig. the drivers seat is like a helicopters' cockpit with gauges all over the place...
and it is FAST :f350 crew long bed on 37" and a 6" lift.
he hauls anything from a 8sec. danger drag ranger, to his 5er or rock crawler
another buddy has the twins on his truck... (dodge dually)
he likes them.

I wouldnt waste your money on an ATS Turbo. If you want a good turbo, go with one of many different ones from Wide Open Performance.
ATS fine print Warranty will get you every time. The warranty is about as good as a taillight warranty. As soon as the taillights are out of sight, the warranty is dead. Look elsewhere

i don't know anything bout warranties. but turbos are turbos. they all look the same inside and out, and they all fail and rebuild the same.
they are all either garret, ai research, holset or kkk- the rest are just copies of them. turbo is a turbo. thats coming from a guy who rebuilt them for 20yrs on anything from 4cyl. concrete flat saws to compound turbos on logging trucks!
the only ones to really get excited about are the wet case twin scroll ceramic ball bearing jobbers.

JMO but I would not buy a pair of socks let alone a turbo
Their reputation precedes them

im going to have to disagree with a few points you have made
#1 not all turbos are the same they may look similar but simple measurements will give you a long list a differences
#2 WOP turbos and Garrett gtp38r's are built solely for 7.3 engine
that is a big advantage over a turbo built for a Caterpillar 988 wheel loader

all a turbo does is move air. the maps and case a/r's are just numbers to show where its adiabatic efficiency is in relation to its exhaust case. what brands are better is semantics. ie: the reason why you can have a t3 super 60 with the same a/r #'s as a t40b yet the size difference is...you can tell trust me. haha
all im saying is there are only a handful of turbo manufactures out there, they are all just built to the customers design. just cause it says ats on the housing doesnt mean it was made at an ats factory.
i guarantee ats isnt tooling out inconel exhaust wheels themselves...um..yeah
of course all turbos are different, thats why i cant seem to put one on my car on my truck. damn bolts dont match up! haha

They are modified BW or SW or such turbos...
They are modified to fit the 7.3 map, but they are not built solely for the 7.3...

It's a Turbonetics Ball Bearing Turbo. Garrett had some kind of problem with something and all their turbos were on back order when I got my TN turbo. TN quit making this turbo when a few people went around talking bad about the TN turbo on some of the forums. From what I understand, TN is the largest supplier of turbos in the world so they didn't need to build a turbo just for the 7.3 crowd.
I like the heck out of this turbo, spools quicker then the 38r. IMO. I can peg the needle on my 40 # boost gauge.
There are quite a few people on here with the TN turbo.

My belief of why the OP hasn't gotten an answer to his question is that nobody here wants to pony-up the money for the ATS system. The problem isn't the turbo, but the fact that to run one of these kits from ATS, you have to BUY THE KIT to make it fit. This drives the price way up since it's not a "drop-in" turbocharger. 90% of the posts on internet forums consist of people wanting to buy the cheapest thing that they can find and unfortunately, while the ATS kit looks like it would be a very nice setup (not only physically, but on paper as well), it is financially out of reach for the cheap-*** masses.

turbonetics are great units. any ball bearing center section is gonna be better than a standard oil journal type, easier to rebuild, less damage when they pop, less waiting for the turbo to cool off, just an all round better unit.
those turbonetics' boost some of the most powerful engines made.
a .38r is just a regular ole' dry case turbo just like all the other turbo's on the road-with a bit more low end efficiently(boost) meaning the exhaust case is tighter around the impeller, which in turn if spun too high in some applications can cause the exhaust to build up behind it: drive pressure...
sorry for rambling on
