I am working on a 92 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L motor. It came in with a starter problem and I replaced the starter. Now there is a noise coming from the starter that sounds like it is staying engaged. I tried replacing the starter thinking it may have been a bad rebuilt starter but the noise is still there. If I inplug the alternator the noise goes away. I have also tried replacing the alternator and the solenoid. Any help would be appreciated, I am stumped.
i had a problem with one sticking so i loosened the mounting bolts and moved it around just a lil bit until i got it just right. also on a lot of starters there are shims you have to use to keep the gear teeth meshed just perfectly. w/o shims it will grind.
