My speedo was jumping around again and I took a look at my VSS on my rear diff, i found some flecks of metal so i cleaned it off, re inserted it and took it out again. I found more metal. In the past I had blown spider gears and thought i cleaned it all out. Well I decided to have a looksie in the hole at the top of the diff and I noticed that my tone ring is VERY WORN. What could have caused chunks of the teeth to be missing? I don't see how this can be new because when i inspected it when replacing spider gears it was just a little worn. Truck has 103000.
The metal used for the tone ring is very weak, and is easily worn down. If there is any junk floating around in there, it can cause damage to the tone ring in a very short amount of time. It is not hard to replace, but it helps if you know how to set up a differential, because you need to remove the carrier to remove the ring. You may need to remove the ring gear, as well.
I was able to replace the spider gears myself, is the job anywhere near that complexity? Do I have to do all the backlash settings and such? Would it be a good time to swap out some gears while i'm at it. I'm thinkin about bumping up my gear ratio to 3.73 or 4.10 for my 32's, maybe throw a selectable locker in, or would it be more cost effiecient to find an 8.8 with the gears i need and take it to a shop as an axle and they'll charge me less since i'm not taking up a spot? Thanks for the input.
ok, IF you remove the carrier and are VERY sure which side the shims came out of, and then mark the ring gear so that you can put it back exactly where it came from, then you shouldn't have to reset the backlash. Just put everything back exactly the way it came off and you should be ok.
The tone ring is pressed on and has an indexing tab. I typically get it set snug by hand, and then let the ring gear press it on as it's re-installed.
As for changing gears, then you will have to do the pinion preload and backlash settings, and all the fun that goes with that. If you want to install a selectable locker (such as an ARB or E-locker), then you have just increased the complexity by about 10x over just installing gears. If you aren't comfortable setting up the gears, then don't attempt the locker.
That tone ring and sensor is ussually for the RABS. I know on my '90 the VSS is on the end of the speedo cable that slides into the transfer case, and the ABS sensor is that one that slides into the rear end and is sensing the tone ring.
I just rebuilt my Rear 8.8 myself about two months ago. Put in an ARB and 4.56 gears. Haven't had any problems yet.
I'm having what sounds like the typical spdo problems of jerking at 50+MPH. I've replaced the sender/sensor, two replacement speedos from salvage yard and both did the exact same thing at 50mph. I've checked for corrosion at connections and traced wiring to firewall plug and all is okay. Oh, truck is 95 I6 manual f150 4x4. From reading other's posts my last try to fix the problem is the tone ring and I plan to replace that this weekend. My question is how does this ring go bad. It doesn't do anything....the teeth don't touch anything, they just spin around on the gear. Why in heavens name do they go bad? I've even changed my rearend grease every 30,000 miles and the truck only has 80,000 miles on it now and it still must be bad. Does anyone know what causes them to trash out?
Mine went bad probably because the spider gears expoded in the rear diff and I had to drive home. Some metal chunks that I had missed caused the ring to wear prematurely. That is the cause for me. As far as regular wear and tear no only other way I can see (correct me anybody if i'm wrong, because I would like to know also) the ring getting chewed up back there is if the bearings wear out and cause the tone ring to rotate not perfectly and thus maybe hitting part of the case. Maybe heat and milage wear it down over the years. Just a guess.

I guess my sig isn't showing up. Its a 93 bronco with 351, 3.55 gears, e40d
