If I understand correctly you loosened the hardware holding the arm on and DROVE around? What would have happened if your idea did work? An Accident? I saw a mid size car missing a couple of lug nuts. It sheard of two of the others and was working the 5th one loose when the guy drove into the shop. Another mile and he would have lost his tire. Use an air hammer and a torch to warm up the arm (Don't cut the arm) if the arm gets damaged buy a new one. Alot cheaper then paying for someone's life if you lose the steering and jump a curb or hit a car head on. Just my $.02

If you mean the pitman arm, use a pitman arm puller or a gear puller. Though cheap gear pullers (2 arms) tend to be a bit wimpy and will bend if they are used for anything other then a straight pull.
