My truck has been having the problem of hard starting and once started, it will run for about 30 secs and cutoff. I’ll restart it once or twice, then it will run slightly rough for about a minute and then it runs fine until it sits for a few hours or more. I was told to replace the ignition module and for some reason I can’t get the distributor to move, it will not rotate or pull out, I mean it is frozen solid!! I have the locking bolt removed but to no avail, is there something else I need to loosen? I have read some ideas on the forum, but have not seen why the distributor should be so hard to move. Any ideas? Also does the aforementioned problem sound like the ignition module? TIA!!
It is stuck and you are just going to have to keep trying to move it. Maybe soak it a little with something to help break up the stuff that has lock the dizzy in place. Maybe a little tapping will help break it loose? Before you move it mark the dizzy and the block so you have a good refernce to realign it too when putting things back together.
You might want to rotate the crankshaft one-way a few degrees and then turn it back the opposite way. Since the distributor hold down bolt is already removed then it might just pop the distributor a little bit when the crankshaft is turned in either direction.
On our 351W engine, I did turn the crankshaft back and forth and then tried to pull the distributor up while trying to turn it in clockwise direction. The distributor gears and the gears where it meet up with the camshaft are not vertical but the gears are somewhat angled at 45 degrees and that is why you have to turn the distributor while pushing the distributor in or out.
Thanks for the replies. I have tried tapping it, but did not try moving the crank or soaking it. I'll try those in a couple of days, will be out of town for a few. Have a good one.
No need to remove it to get the module off -- but be sure you get the special little tool from an AutoZone type place, then you can just turn the dizzy and change the module qithotu removal.
My 460 dizzy was stuck when I was tearing down the motor, so I just wrapped the dizzy with a piece of old floor mat, clamped on a huge pipe wrench, and yanked. Broke free instantly. The floor mat scrap (or vinyl, or rubber, or even heavy fabric) was necessary as not to gouge the heck out of the soft, aluminum distributor head.
I went to replace the dizzy cap and i broke both screws in half. I tried drilling them out but the screws are softer then the dizzy itself. in all, i had to replace the dizzy itself. one problem was that i could somewhat turn it but could not pull it out. I used a flat head screwdriver to pry up the dizzy to rotate it some more. Still couldnt get it out. I pushed it back in and started the engine for a half second to turnit over and i tried again. it rotated easier a bit but it took 5 minutes of rocking it about quickly to finally get that peice of crap out of my engine. i put a new cap, rotor button, wires and platinum plugs and it runs like a top. awesome just stick with it if you still havent fixed it.
Thanks for all the replies. I asked my friendly neighborhhod mechanic and he said those Ford dizzys can be a real pain in the butt to get out. He also thought my problem may be the idle control valve and not the IGN module. Guess I'll look into that.
