Another 9 in question

Hi Friends,

I have another question about 9 in. rearends. I bought one from a salvage yard that they said came from 68 with a 390 four speed. I had it sand blasted, primed and now I'm ready for new bearings, seals, etc. The tag is broken off that gave the ratio and other data. Question 1, the end of the axels have C8TW5D stamped on it. Whats it mean? Question 2, it also has inboard shock mounts. Can I make this work? I don't want to get to far along and find this doesn't work.

Thanks,

Don

The only thing in the part number I pay attention to is the C8 prefix - means '68.

I used one from a '65 under my '48 and had to move the shock mounts - no big deal. I carefully used a 4" grinder to remove the weld holding them and re-welded them where they needed to be. Remove the carrier and axles and drain the lube - just to keep the fire danger to a minimum while welding

While you have the carrier out, count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears, divide one by the other and presto, you have the ratio.
