Please help because mechanic does not know

I recently had my transmission dropped/ removed. I have a 1985 F350, 7.5l 4x2 manual trans (Warner). I'm buying another used transmission online. I thought the T18 is for 4x2, and the T19 was 4x4. But after I research, it says the 7.5l and 6.9l was a T19.

My question is: I'm buying a trans from a 1987 F250 4x2. I know they both have a 4" extension. Will this work? What questions can I ask before ordering online to make sure. I know the PTO input is the same on both trannys. How much of a risk am I taking that this might not work/fit?

I don't want to order it, wait a week for it to be shipped. It not fit, have to ship it back (another week), then have to get a new one shipped to me again.....

You need a 2WD transmission, the output shaft the 4WD variant is a different size.

Both the T18 and T19 come in 2x and 4x variations, but the T19 has a synchronized first gear (T18 doesn't, need to be at a dead stop to put gearshift into fist gear) as well as a PTO on both sides (T18 has the PTO on passenger side only).

The easy way to tell if you have a t-19 is that it has a PTO cover plate on both sides.
The t-18 only has one on the passenger side.

Thanks Ard & Ctub. One last question. Does engine size matter? Will a transmission for a 7.5l bolt up to a 5.7(or whatever)? I don't know what size engine the donor truck has. All I know is F250 4x2 4spd Warner trans.

Car-part.com shows you have only one choice in trannies;
M.T., Warner, T-19, 4x2 (6.9L & 7.5L)

They show that no one has any in Delaware.

Doing a "mid-atlantic" search came up with these places having the tranny you need. It shows trannies from 83 through 87 fitting. There may be more, that's just what came up in the search.

You can swap bellhousings on HD manual transmissions of this era.
So, no it doesn't matter if 351 or 460 as long as it's 4x2 for your application.

I thought you had to be stopped before shifting into first, on all mt. Never really tried, since my first car had lost the syncro's before I got it.

You ought to drive a modern vehicle sometime.

I thought 84 Escort was modern, lol. I'll keep the idea in mind, when I get my truck converted to a manual.

What about the NP435 tranny? Around my area they are more common than the T18/19 trannys.

435 doesn't have syncro first either, but the T-19 does.

With the first gear ratio of any of these gearboxes there is little reason to be shifting from second to first anyhow.

The T19 has a few different first gear ratios, and the 2wd units are pretty common in 4.02:1, I have one 4x4 4.02 unit, 2 5.11, and 1 6.32. I can assure you you use first gear plenty with the 4.02:1 gearset, even in a stock truck.

I never really used it
There is a zf5 in my truck now.
Still don't use first

The T19 trans was only used behind 460 engines and the 6.9 diesel and early 7.3 diesels.
