Oil pan drain plug problem

The current drain plug on my '74 F250 (460 engine) is a little stripped out and doesn't seal properly. It slowly leaks oil, but enough that it is a problem. The current plug is a self tapping bolt with a drain bolt in the middle, so it looks like an aftermarket bolt that was put on the truck years ago because the oil pan threads were stripping.

Need to know if there is something else out there that could seal this. I saw an article in Popular Mechanics once that showed a rubber cork-type piece that expanded to fit the hole when you tapped in a center expander. I've tried Autozone, but all they have is the same drain bolt I currently have.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Chris

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a rubber expandable plug at Napa, and will try that this week. I only drive this truck on weekends, so I'm just not ready yet to try and replace the oil pan.

When I do get to the point of trying to replace the pan, what is all involved with the 460? I assume I would need to unhook the exhaust and radiator hoses to lift up the engine high enough to get the pan off, but would I need to also unhook the tranny/driveshaft, etc? Never done that before, so I just don't know what I would be getting into.

Clean the plug and put a dab of rtv on the threads. I never have a drip this way.

Re-Tap?

Can I re-tap the threads on the pan and put in a larger bolt?
