Any of you guys have any experience with headers ?I'm thinking about dropping a 300 into my daily driver and I always had problems blowing e.m.gaskets with the factory manifolds on my 300's I've owned in the past. Those things are a major P.I.A.to mess with.I think I'll try some tubes if I do this swap.If you have pics of a set installed I'd like to check them out. my email is hooligan971@aol.com
Thanks,
Patrick
Well they are supposed to help the 300 better than most v8 headers because V8 manifolds flow like a header compared to the I6 manifold. I am not saying v8 manifolds flow like headers, but just making a comparison. I got mine today but I am waiting for my intake and carb to arrive before I install.
The Hedman pipes I've got on my truck will be 5 years old in August and are showing no signs of rusting through. I had gasket problems for a while, but figured out how to prevent them. What seems to work best for me is to glue 2 of the metallic gaskets together with a gasket adhesive (Copper Coat is my favorite, but it's getting hard to find around here). The welds that connect the tubes to the flange on the gasket side are thick enough to cut right through a single gasket, but if you use two they cut through one of them, then seal on the flat part of the flange like they are supposed to. For the collectors, $10 spent on a set of copper gaskets will be well worth it. I used to change collector gaskets on a monthly basis until I went to copper. Now I just tighten them once or twice a year and drive on.
There are a couple of not-too-great header pics on my site at http://www.wantlandracing.com/f100engine.html but if you're doing this to eliminate gasket problems, you're going about it wrong. Factory manifolds will always be able to seal better than headers.
I you use the high temp 1200 degree paint with ceramic the headers shouldn't rust. I used that on my mustang with no problems. I already have 1 new steel gasket that goes between the head and manifold and 1 used one. If the gasket is going to be cut through by the headers could I just used the used one as the one that gets cut through and the new one for the sealing purpose? I have plenty of the spray gasket copper stuff.
