So....I just installed a Flomaster 40 2 days ago and man-o-man....I'm in LOVE!!!
One of my friends installed a cold air intake in his small, would be fun to drive over, neon and it really seemed to work and made his custom exhaust sound even sweeter.
My question is this, in your opinion, which is better for the money:
1) Cold air intake
2) Ram air
3) Simple K&N filter change
4) Other
I'm willing to spend more money for an intake, but will they really make that much of a difference over a K&N?
I went with the whole air intake replacement kit from K&N, not just a filter and I'm happy with the results. I noticed a difference not only in performance, but in sound
First off, I would always recommend buying things from www.motorhaven.com if at all possible, since that is the company that owns this site. However, they don't sell entire K&N filter and intake kits, to my knowledge.
I bought mine from www.truckperformance.com and it cost about $220.00. It was very quick to get to me too, I ordered it on a Wednesday and had it by Friday. It took about an hour to install and I played with it all weekend
As far as picking that brand goes, I've just always heard good things about K&N filters. I try to stick with products that a lot of people use, not something new to the market or something that is extremely cheap. Sometimes the new company can go out of business, leaving you without a warranty, or total lack of technical support. Also, if the part is really cheap, that is usually because it is made very cheap, I'd rather pay a little more for a high quality system.
I also upgraded a 2001 F-150 with a 4.6 by adding the full K&N air intake FIPK kit. Made a noticeable difference in performance. And Sound. Check with your local autozone. Mine in Janesville WI gives a discount to us public service types. IE Paramedics and Firefighters. Did you do a full cat back system with dual pipes or just a replacement with a 40 series? I'm considering the exhaust upgrade and am unsure of which to go with a 40 series or a 50 series.
Thanks for the info guys. I just went with a muffler swap instead of the entire cat back. Be aware that if you just replace the muffler you will need extra pipe to be welded in because the FM is shorter than stock. I decided to do this after learning that when a friend went from a 2.5" pipe to a 3" one he lost a lot of low end torque, although it did make the sound deeper. I care more about performance and keeping the stock pipe worked great for me.
I went with a FM 40 because I wanted it to be obnoxiously loud. =D However, it did not turn out that way. It's a great sounding muffler and sounds very deep. When rev'ed up it made my 5.4L sound like a race truck.
I purchased the muffler from the Ebay store of performancepeddler.com for $50 (including shipping) and then took it to a muffler shop and they welded it in with the extra pipe that was needed for $45 and took about 20 mins. Altogether $95 was a great price to pay for not only a performance boost, but a great sound. Now I just need another paycheck for the intake. =p
