I live in a rural area and farming is one of the main industries in this area. I've grown up in this area and I wouldn't trade it for anything but when the neihboring farmer hauls manure the fly population gets 10x worse. Has anyone ever tried the "plastic bag of water over the door" or any other methods to repel the pesky flies.
Bruker, I can tell you of the most efficient fly trap yet devised. Take a 2 gallon jar (the kind that institutional kitchens have mayo or stuff in). Make a small hole (1/4 inch) in the top. Place something smelly, like raw meat or a small dead fish in the bottom. You may want to place it on top of an inverted cup or something. Fill the jar with about 2 inches of water. You will not believe how many flies go in after the smell, but the clear glass is like a window to them, and they don't come back out. Emptying the trap is up to you.
The clear bag of plain water helps in some conditions, you'll have to try to see if it'll help in yours.
Hang in well lit areas, and it's going to take numerous bags, not just one or two.
The bags play havoc with the flys ability to see correctly with the light being refracted through the water. I guess it gives them a fly headache.
The other idea will work, BUT, you end up having to put up with the stench from the bait/trap. It can also be a draw to an even wider area of flies as the odor gets carried in the air. Bit it does work.
Do an internet search for "fly-control", there are some other interesting possibilities out there.
Any bait type trap will draw flies, make sure you use them a long way away from the garage.
Make sure the household trash and garbage or any recycling marterials are not stored anywhere near the garage. Flies can smell garbage thru a tight fitting metal container. Those odor molecules leak out. No trash can is gas tight.
I use a few shots of aerosol fly killer after I finish working. Those pest strips seem to work well.
A bigger problem in the summer here is mosquitos. I have found the "bubba fan" described in some old posts here to be a good solution for that problem. It helps with the flies also.
