Egr

I have a '99 3.0 ffv ranger with 187,000 miles.
over the last two weeks I have pulled 3 "EFR flow insufficient" codes and 2 "EGR flow excessive" codes. The CEL illuminates every three days or so, then I pull the code and erase it. It seems like the CEL is coming on when I slow down.
What could cause these apparantly opposite readings?

thanks for your help.

First, welcome to FTE!!!!!!!

You have the classic symptoms of a bad DPFE sensor!! It is bolted to your upper intake, has a 3 wire connector on it, and 2 hoses coming out the bottom. When you replace it,
make sure the hoses are good and clean....This sensor is
about $75 from Ford.

results......

okay, I got the DPFE sensor from Advance auto ($51.88) and pull around back to switch it out. first thing I notice: the original is metal, the new one is plastic. seems like a down-grade. I take the old one off, and that's when I find my real problem....the connector marked REF is corroded pretty badly. SO there's corrosion in the line. So I'm glad the new one is plastic, cause I won't have this problem again. I cleaned out both hoses as best I could, and hooked up the new plastic sensor. everything is going good for a while. Then, later in the day, my CEL illuminates........EGR insufficent. I'm gonna try cleaning those hoses out again.

Did you disconnect the ground cable from the battery for 20+ minutes to clear the code?

The plastic DPFE is actually an upgrade, for the corrosion reasons you mentioned.

With all those mile I'm wondering if the valve is dirty and it's sticking in different positions causing the various codes.

I cleared it with my OBD-II code scanner. Disconnecting the battery doesn't do anything different, does it?

Disconnecting the battery is like a "reboot" it's superior because it forces the NVM to completely clear. Unfortunately you'll have to reset your radio station presets (assuming you have a stock system).

The code scanner will clear the codes don't get me wrong, but lifting the neg battery cable is the better way to go.

Hey, twodollerbill,an insufficent flow code can be caused by the EGR port being clogged.Usually code 401.to fix this, remove the EGR valve, under it is a finger sized hole,at the BOTTOM of this hole is a SMALL port.use a stiff piece of wire to poke it out, then a pipe cleaner or something to clean it more, this may fix your problem.Mine did the same thing,I replaced the DPFE,the vaccum valve, and EGR and every other day the cel was back on,drove me nuts.I cleaned this port and no cel now for over 10,000 miles!

I've run into this same exact situation as well over the past month. First I got a CEL reading for a bad EGR, then a week later, after replacing the EGR, I got a CEL reading for "EGR flow insufficient". A friend of mine works at a local ford dealership, and he says that DPFE go bad all the time. He has even replaced 8 in one day! Napa was cheaper than the dealer, too...$61.00.
