Rev limiter on 2.3L

Does anybody know what the rev limiter is on the 2.3L engine? What is the shift limit on the 2.3L with the 5spd tranny? Going from my early drining experience, VW bug, I learned 2 shift listening 2 the engine and tranny, use this to drive my Ranger but now that I've got my tach I notice that I shift @ about 3000rpm, have pushed to 4000rpm.

Just one of my curosities.

Just guesstimating, but I think the rev limiter is around 6000 revs or so...you won't touch it without semi-serious hearing discomfort.

You learned on a Beetle as well? Well, I don't think a stock 1.5L could do more than 4000 revs....even when working well, which was rare in my Beetle (69 model w/sunroof.

I sorta' miss that car, but fuel injection and A/C and not losing a quart of oil per week...I can live with that.

Some info

Well, for one thing, the ranger version of the 2.3(before 2001) limits to 6000rpm but really mechanically redlines at about 7000. The newer(2001+) 2.3L has a slighter lower redline but the technology limits your speed to a too slow and unforgiving 90mph(in northwest Florida anyway) on a 5spd manual. I drove a 2003 and it just pretty much said kaplutttt until i let oiff to go under 90mph. kinda crappy considering you can't be in a big hurry or go to an emergency(i have a 97 mazda 2.3 and ive hit 95 just fine going to an emergency). Maybe new mandates keep speed down but I'm sure a clever computer could change those speed limits.

I always thought the rev limiter only worked in nuetral, and it was the governor that kicked you back down when you drive too fast. Don't know when the rev limiter kicks in, but while driving normally, I usually shift at 3000-3500 RPM. When I'm racing or just feel like runnin' her out, I shift at 6000 RPM. It could probably go a few more, but I don't like the mental image of the head popping off and flying through the hood. Also, by that time I've lost my power band, so it's really not worth the risk of reving that high.
