My inner tie rods are loose and need to be replaced. The new rod ends I purchased have a little expansion pins to secure the rod ends onto the rack.
How are these pins removed from the rods on the car? Does enough of the pin protrude such that I can pull it out? I will admit that I have yet to open up the current boots, but I don't have a backup car and once I start, I won't have an opportunity to get out to the parts store.
Ford actually had a special puller to remove the pins. You might be able to just screw a screw into it and pull it out. I've also dragged them out with a chisel by chiseling on the head. Most of the time though it is easiest to just turn the tie rod end off and break the pin. That's not the right way to do it but I've seen it done lots of times.
My suspension instructor showed us the inner tie rods ends on fords, Showed us the "special ford tool" and then told us the tool only gets the roll pin out some of the time and the way you usually have to remove them is to wrench the inner tie rod off and then chase the threads on the rack.
On my '91 the factory pin had a mushroom head that could be gripped with a pair of side-cut (wire cutter) pliers and pulled out that way. My manual showed a roll pin as discussed above but a soft peened pin was installed. Replacement is fairly simple but you will need a large jawed adjustable wrench or slip joint pliers to unscrew the large inner tie rod nut.
