I bought some new Denso Iridiums for my '97 Expy 4.6 4x4 and I didn't have enough time to put the last ones on the passenger and driver side. I drove it for awhile to see how it was and it stutters at acceleration and the ride is a bit more rough. I do see a bit of more power increase in the 3000 RPM range. My question is if the stuttering and the porr acceleration is due to poor install of the 6 already in or because the remaining 2 haven't been changed. I won't have time till next week to put the other 2 and I just wanted to know if that was the problem and if it would hurt the engine in any way. The two remaining are Motorcrafts, if you need to know. Thanks.
was it running rough before you changed the 6 plugs? if so then maybe one or both of the remaining plugs are causing it if not then you may want to check plug gap's on the six you put in.
I've never been a believer in one brand of plug being unusable in certain engines. That is, until these newer generation engines and electronic controls came along. Now, I won't use anything but Motorcraft Double Plats in my Triton as supplied and engineered by Ford. I'd wait until someone else has used those ND's with success in the 4.6. So far I have heard bad stories.
Why go for those exotic plugs anyway? My Motorcraft's run well past 100k flawlessy!
I really feel stupid for buying these now. I'm going to put the last 2 in and and see what happens. If it gets better, I'll keep them. If not, then I'll buy some Motorcrafts and see if Autozone will take the Densos back. I hope they will, or I'll have wasted a hundred bucks. If that's the case, you live you learn...
Alright, well I got the last 2 in and made sure everything was tight and altogeter. I started it up and surprisingly evrything was working nice and smooth. Everything seemed and sounded like it was running fine and I took it for a drive and they're great. Acceleration has improved and there is a noticeable power increase. Not big, but noticeable. It runs a bit better and I've saved at least a gallon in gas. So it all went well. I thought it wouldn't turn out right, but it did. Is it worth $100? With these gas prices today in Vegas being $2.40 midgrade, it's safe to say that it will pay for itself.
I think you might be referring to the NGKs. I'm pretty sure you can't get the Denso Iridiums for that price anywhere. They range anywhere from $10 to $13+ each. I know NGKs are around $6 or something. Summitracing doesn't even sell Densos...

Very interesting, Seanny! Now we know those "horror' stories about other plugs are bunk. I'm not sure how they could be saving you any gasoline over any other type of plug unless your old set was just plain worn out for awhile.
