Ignition problem, motor won't stop turning over...
Hi y'all, how bout them Flames!
Okay, i feel a little sheepish about starting this thread as a couple earlier threads seem to address the same problem. But mine's a little different so here it goes...
Recently replaced solenoid on 90 efi F250 and everything was fine for a few weeks of daily use. One morning, turn the ignition and the engine won't stop turning over... even with the key out. Only thing that stops it is disconnecting the battery.
So from what I've read, it's likely either the solenoid or the ignition switch. Start with solenoid and then try ignition switch if that doesn't take care of the problem? Is that the way to go?
My biggest worry is this, I need to reconnect the cable to see if anything has been fixed, is this sudden surge likely to cause problems elsewhere in the system?
In the past there were two times when i turned the key and nothing happened. The second time i turned the key it would fire up. I just figured my memory was failing me and i didn't really turn the key the first time, was this a sign of problems somewhere that I should have picked up on?
Ive seen some of the aftermarket starter relays that were built backwards of the Ford original. To correct that situation you wire the relay in reverse of the original. If you dont the relay will stick and the starter will remain engaged. If you failed to disconnect the battery in time the relay will weld itself internally and you will need to replace it again.
Had the same problem on a friends 89 Ranger. Try this, remove the wire coming from the ignition switch, it's the small wire that just slip fits onto the starter relay. Connect the battery, if it cranks, replace the starter relay. If it doesnt crank reconnect that small wire & if it cranks by itself replace the ignition switch. On the Ranger it was a shorted out ignition switch.
Great, thanks alot. I'm gonna try the above as soon as I can. Really appreciate the advice, I was wondering if there was a way to isolate either the solenoid or ignition switch.
It is probably your ignition switch and I bet if you tried you could probably turn the truck on without the key. You might have a faulty ignition known for starting a car fires sometimes. I would spend the $10 and change it out before assuming a new relay is defective.
Okay, so I did that little test that 87 XLT recommended and it indicated the relay, so I put in a new relay and everything works fine. Thanks alot for that! Is it unusual that a relay would fail so quickly (the one I replaced was only a month or so old)? Could something, like the ignition switch, have caused it to fail, or was this just something that happens from time to time?
COngrats on the fix. Maybe what Homer was saying about aftermarket relays would explain the relay sticking closed. Like Rebocardo sez, changing out the ignition switch is not a bad idea.
7 or 8 years ago I read about different Fords -including 87 Rangers- going up in flames due to a short in the ignition switches. For some strange reason mine was not recalled by Ford, so I changed it myself. Simple 20 minute job following the instructions in my Haynes manual.
