My brake lights don't work, my third brake light above the cab works. My turn signals work, reverse lights work, 4 ways work in the front but not in the back. I was told it was the directional flasher but I can't find it. Bought a new one at the auto store and its the old round type, all relays in the truck are newer square ones.
If your turnsignals work in the rear, this means the bulbs and the wiring going to the back are good. The third brake light working means the brake pedal switch has power and is working. The only thing left is the multi-function switch or the steering column wiring. I vote it may be the multi-function switch is bad(fancy name for the turnsignal switch).
You drive everyday and dont know where the turn signal switch is? Yep, its the same part you grab hold of to make the turn signal lamps turn on and off. Just under the cover on the steering columb are two screws holding it to the columb and it has two elecrical connectors plugged into the back of it. Look for pins pulled out of the connectors when you take it out, that is a common problem on the full sized Ford trucks.
Three days ago I bought a 97 f150 and have a brake light problem. The headlights, markers, tail, turn and hazards work. The 3rd light & brakelights do not work. Nor does the license plate lights. I wonder if this is just a brake pedal switch replacement issue or a larger problem. Is the switch something a non-mechanic like me can replace?
You say if the highmount isn't working "it's likely the switch"
but then say the highmount doesn't work through the multifunction switch???
I'm confused??? so if the highmount doesn't work through the multifunction switch
how could it likely be the switch?
By the way, my highmount is working, the only thing that's out are my brakelights.
checked all fuses....etc
any other suggestions... THX

That second reply was to FordTrax with his problem, and I was referring to the brake lamp switch being the problem.
To HomerWinzlow: I was sure it was the switch (on the brake pedal) but when I got under there, it turns out that the lt.gr/red wire is broken off from the connector.
To bigchief2: I was confused about the highmount and multifunction switch too. I have a Chilton book but it only helped for the circuit schematics. I just got this truck and haven't had time to get a proper repair manual.
Well anyway, my new problem is the connector wire and I need to figure out what to do about that. I will check the pins on the multifunction switch as well.
That broken wire is a common problem. You can usually get the pigtail connector from the Ford dealer pretty cheap or try to repair the one you have. The pigtail is pretty inexpensive so I usually just replace it. Meantime you can bare the end of the wire and wedge it into place and tape off until you can get it fixed proper
