I have the diablo delta, in my 93 4.0. It makes a noticeable power gain. If you have an auto tranny, you will get firmer shifts when your running it hard. Stay away from jet or hypertech. They will not get you near the gains of diablo, plus they only tune for wide open throttle, where Diablo will be tuned for all throttle positions and RPM's to get you better all around driveability. Also, take a look to see what the highest octane level fuels in your area are. The higher available, the better you can have it tuned. When I ordered mine, I thought 91 was the highest available, well a couple weeks ago, I check a different station, and they have 92, so I think I might be getting a 2nd tune added to take advantage of it. One thing I've noticed is these high gas price and peformance chips don't work well together. The so called gains don't out way the fuel cost. Mines on a shelf. I like my other mods that don't require high octane fuel like electric fans, underdrive pullies, headers and so forth. These mods blow the chip away in my opinion.
I had the same concerns about high octane cost, so I forked over a little extra for a 3 stage. The third program is for regular fuel, but it address's the other drivability problems with stock programs, mainly the auto tranny. I don't know when Ford started programing trannys for grey haired, white knuckled, grannys who want to pretend there is no shifting as they head for Fla. at 50 mph in the left lane. But the late model Ford auto trannys suck big time stock.
The Diablo is worth the price for the tranny improvements alone.
I just put mine in Monday evening, and am running the high octane program with 93, I am going to keep track of milage using the miles per Dollar method for a couple of tank fulls and report back.
I'm thinking about getting a chip for my 94 4x4 4.0l ranger w/auto tranny. AG4.0 what kind of improvements did you notice with your chip. What kind of improvements can i expect. Also what chip would you reccomend i get, the 2 stage or the 3 stage. Is the 87 octane program worth the extra $$?
I like the 2 stage, even though I have only switched back to stock once, because my wife (fiance at the time) offered to fill it up for me and I didn't want to tell her about the chip so I put in Regular. Some people like the 87 octane tune because of the shifting improvements and removal of rev limiters, but even if I had an auto, I could never justify it. Besides, if you keep your foot out of it, you should get better mileage. Mine is up about 2 mpg all around, and the higher gas costs actually gives me lower cost per mile using premium getting better mileage than regular and getting lesser mileage, because as the prices go up, the difference between premium and regular still stays the same, and that 14 cent difference becaomes a lower percentage giving me a lower cost per mile using premium.
As far as performance, don't expect it to be like a supercharger, but you will notice better power at all RPM's and better driveability. It will hold it's speed better on hills in overdrive and has much better pull going up an onramp to the interstate. I am very happy with it, as it is by far the best performance mod I have done.
Man, i gotta wipe the drool up from my lips. I want one of these things now. That just sounds so sweet. I think it would be cool to get better gas mileage than 14. I'm really into buying one of these now. But i better save my money
You really gotta keep your foot out of it to get the better mileage, which can be hard to do, especially when it's new. It'll never pay for itself in gas savings, but it justifies having to put premium in.
91 is what I run with mine. I think that the chips are tuned to 92, which works with 91, but if you have higher octane than 91 available you can get it tuned more aggressive.
