Hydraulic oil
1755 Oliver Diesel (farm tractor) The manual says to use Type 55 Hydrolic oil, however when I went to get it from the local oil company they never heard of it. They had, I belive it was 20-55, it was just a step above break fluid (from what they were saying). So they sold me SW 200? Supose to be the most common hydrolic fluid used in tractors etc. It looks about the same consistancy, but I haven't drained the fluid out of the tractor yet to really compair. Thanks for any info!

Just did a search on "type 55 hydraulic oil".
Hope it helps.
UTF gear oil seems to be close to 20W motor oil in viscosity. I changed out the 80W GL4 factory fill hydraulic oil in my tractor and used Catipillar's version of UTF. So far it works just fine.
Now I have to find a use for 14 gallons of used 80W GL4 gear oil that looks perfectly new...... So far I've been able to use 2 quarts as chain saw bar lube. Only 54 quarts left to go.

Boy did I ever find a mess when I changed out the hydro fluid! Got about a 20 oz bottle of water out before any milky white oil...Think thats bad, I found a chunk of glass, yes GLASS in the filter... About the size of a pencil eraser. So far with the new filter and SW 200 oil it's working pretty good. Now for the 12gal of 80w gear oil @ $35 for a 5LB bucket

On our farm each different tractor has different power systems, our Internationals tend to have the 3pt., ps, tranny, and rear hyd points all tied into one system, and the requirement is UTF for this tractor. Our 830 Case is a different story, each system has its own resivior and each takes different fluid, some take 80w, hyd oil, or UTF.
IMO, putting UTF in place of 80W in is only asking for trouble, with the high heat tractors often endure, I cant understand the logic behind dumping out 80W and replacing with UTF.

Yes the hydraulic's and transmission are separate compartments. Here is my reasoning for wanting to switch to UTF:
1. The original fill spec'ed 80w gear oil. 80w is hard to find so almost everybody uses 85w90 which is still not what was called for.
2. 80w gear oil is near the same viscosity as 20w motor oil. 20w oil is recommended for the transmissions in some other Allis-Chalmers models. Most UTF's are in the 20w range. I'm using Pennsoil Hydra-Trans Fluid in the hydraulic's, which is 10w20.
3. The model WD45 has a separate transmission clutch (hand clutch) which runs in fluid. UTF is advertized to have "excellent frictional qualities."
4. UTF has an excellent additive package for transmissions, plus a demulsifier to knock out any water contamination.
5. UTF usually passes the same Timken Load Test as gear oil.
6. The SuperTech 85w90 I'm using, foams.
7. If I use one fluid for both compartments, I can minimize the oil I keep on hand.
What I don't know is, if different transmission oils are required depending on the way teeth on the gears are cut. Straight cut vs. diagonal. The final drive gears are straight cut, don't know about the transmission gears.
So there are my reasons. I'm still on the fence on this and and I value you guy's input. If anyone has good rebutal to my reasoning here, let's hear it! I would like to hear any opinions pro or con, either way.
But I will need to change the transmission oil soon anyway. When I picked up the SuperTech, the choices were GL-1 and GL-5. I got the GL-5 without thinking about the high sulfur additive in it. I don't know if the WD45 transmission has any yellow metals in it, but why take the chance? (I know, cheap insurance, LOL!) Plus it foams, that can't be good!
