CAUTION!!!!

Since many new 6.0L PSD are just now hitting the 30,000 mile mark (and time for their 1st tranny service)... many dealerships I hear do not know that the this tranny takes a special synthetic fluid... that no other Ford car or truck uses (until now). The filter is a bypass filter and should be changed as well.

I am only at 21,000 and will have it done at 27,000 miles when my next oil change is due.

I have heard of problems when the "lube guy" not diesel tech" changes fluid and he uses what he is used to... not what it calls for in the book.

Beware... I am!!!

I have always taken the stance that it is better to talk to the service tech IN ADVANCE and risk offending him than to wait until after the service and find out that they didn't know what they were doing. I guess I could sum up my take on things as follows (yes, I like lists):

1. Be informed before you take your truck in for ANY service
2. Don't be afraid to double check what they will be doing BEFORE they do it
3. Don't be afraid to ask questions
4. Make sure to read the service printout before you pay for or accept the work
5. This is YOUR TRUCK. If you have a problem with what they plan to do or anything that was done let them know.

I may be a bit more cautious than most, but I have had bad experiences such as over inflation of tires by 30 PSDI, overfilling of oil, wrong coolant, etc.

Caution with this little monster is needed.
One thing you can do, ask to actually see the product that is going in your truck.
Hold the container in your hand……….it forces the service writer to go get it and you to see he knows what is going on. Sounds ridiculous, it has saved a problem in the past. The dealership did not know the product was unique.

One thing you guys forgot to mention, the fluid type!! It it MERCON SP
As John implys knowledge is power, arm yourself with as much of it as you can. READ your owners manual, and don't be scared to refer back to it, or pull it out if a dealership mechanic or service writer questions you. (this is becoming more and more evident in other threads on this board "Oh I didn't know that" and then they make a copy of the page in the owners manual to post ofr other writers/techs) One suggestion that I can make is that a dealership does not need to perform this service, HOWEVER if you take it anywhere else they must be certified to work on and service ALLISON transmissions. As always keep your reciepts for all service work that may be needed later to make a warranty claim.

I keep a log book in my truck that I make an enrty every time I fill up with fuel. Trip meter milage, truck mileage, price of fuel, and gallons purchased. I also keep all of my receipts for filters, oil ect. and also record the mileage when serviced.

I thought the Torqueshift was a Ford transmission.

But good point. I have pulled out the owner manual more than once with the service advisor. They are very insistent that you keep a log and all receipts if you do it yourself or somewhere else. I change all my own oil/filters. I keep every receipt. You should too.

Is it produced by Allison or is it based on an Allison design? What is your source?

The TorqShift is a Ford design produced in a Ford plant in Sharonville, Ohio. Allison had nothing to do with it's development.

Casey, that was my understanding. I was just trying to get mrxlh to check his sources. I know GM uses the Allison with the Duramax.

Guess I was wrong, could have swore up and down it was an allison. I didn't think Ford had the technology to build an automatic this good. Cause they have been world renouned for building automatics that don't hold up.

Ryan,

I drove a Bronco with 5.0 EFI and AOD tranny for 18 years. At 180,000 miles I took it to a tranny shop to have it overhauled. The guy calls up and says "Your tranny doesn't need overhauling. Just change the fluid, filter and adjust it and it will be fine." I sold it at 250,000 with the same original tranny and it is still running today. I used it like a real 4wd.

I think Ford makes a good tranny but that's just my opinion based on owning 5 Ford trucks and never having a tranny or running gear problem.

LOL

funny how people have totally different experiences with the same parts...

i have HATED every ford transmission built since ~1982 or so, when the AOD became their mainstay for rwd trannies.
my 89 lx 5.0 went thru 7 aod's!
one of those was an art carr prepped unit, cost me 3k!
i finally put in a "Performance Automatic" built c-4, and it lasted till the car got stolen a year later.

my 5R110W is ALREADY having issues from time to time....and i have had the servo TSB performed....

Mattsf250, what kind of mods you have on it. I kept the Bronco suspension and tires stock. The engine was stock if anyone asked. Jacobs Off Road if you realllywant to know. Same as my 6.0. Bone stock. Except.....

The 89?

crap...... everyhting was modded...

it has a stock 5.0 for the majority of the aod failures, but once i put the art carr aod in, i started spraying a 150 shot, and drag raced it ALOT. over 80 bottles of nitrous before the engine was too tired to risk it.

with the c-4, it got a 347, ported trick flow heads, probe 10:1 pistons, h beam rods...and a custom ground roller, as well as 42lb/hr injectors, a ported tfs intake, a stand alone fuel management system....and 14lbs of bewst from a vortech s-trim.
the aod built by carr was SUPPOSED to be good to ~600hp....which is close to what the car was pushing, more likely about 650 at the flywheel, based on the rwhp of 519 thru an automatic.
