Roar under the hood
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Mar-02 AT 07:39 AM (EST)]Crossing the Everglades last week pulling my 10,000 lb trailer with my F 350 4x4 in 3 gear (automatic) at 60 mph I heard this load roar 3 times. Just like it down shifted a few gears but it did not shift. I've been thinking that the radiator fan kicked in (locked up). Strange fan roar just like it had an electric cluth, on/off. Ran like that for about 5 minutes and then quite. 85 degree air temp and the first time with the trailer. All gauges where normal.

That's what it was. When the cooling fan clutch engages the fan turns quite a bit faster, and gets pretty loud. Once the engine is cooled off the clutch will disengage and the fan slows down.
It sounds like it is working as it should.

I agree. I have not received my PSD yet, but, I drive a International 4600 bobtail truck that has a very similar engine. It does exactly the same thing. Even traveling 65 mph, the fan will cool the engine more when it engages.

To determine the problem may take research, bring me your rig and I'll be glad to "test" it out and let you know
