Holy Batcrap, spikedog!!! I kinda use the same technique for troublesome bees in my garage...1 carpenter bee followed by couple nails and bb's. nothing like the Binford 6000 turbo. I highly reccomend it. I'm glad my bats are outside.

I had bats in my attic a few years ago. Have you noticed if they migrate away during the winter? If so, wait till they're gone and plug the holes as others have mentioned.
I didn't find any poop in the attic, just a dead bat. I did have to rinse the porch roofs off a few times though before they were gone.
