Bats

Does anyone know a sure fire way to get rid of those pesky flying creatures?

The house I've been working on improving (good ole Grandma's) is infested with them.

The thought of a cat came up but I'm not sure if that would even work.

They make a frequency generator that you plug into the wall, and it is supposed to drive them out.It is one of those that humans cant hear, but rodents can.(I guess it drives them batty) haha

How big is the area they infest and can you find the exit hole? Find the hole and plug it after they leave in the evening with Great Stuff expanding foam. If the area is small spray ether in the hole. It forces out the oxygen and makes them leave. Then spray the foam.

Try mounting a bat box outside somewhere. maybe they will leave the house and move into there. you don't want them goen from the property. they are great for getting rid of mosquittos.

Dan is right about the expanding foam and the need to plug all the holes they may be using. Stand outside just before dark and watch and you will likely be amazed at how many you have. Any crack is a likely exit for them; a sign will be the odor from their droppings and an oily shine on the surface of the wood they are squeezing in and out of.

On mine, they were entering at the corner boards and squeezing in under the lap siding. They will stay in any size hole, not just an attic.

After you are sure they are all out (an hour or so after dark) wet the wood and apply the foam. When the foam dries, cut the excess off with a sharp knife, the water will allow the foam to come off without bonding to the more visible exterior surfaces. The foam will simply plug the holes and turn a dark brown over time.

It is against the law in most places to poison them and they do have a very useful purpose in mosquito control.

Exterminators use a special netting. They can fly out, but not back in. If they have set up a nursery (baby bats) you don't want to seal the hole, as the babys will stink when they die . The babys will move outside if the adults can't get back in and they hear the adults outside.

I know of at least one hole they are using. It is right at the front entrance to the house. I have been watching them for years coming & going & have said something but nobody want action done. I would have to say that the house is highly infested.

They crawl into the eves and into the attic I would assume. Sometimes one makes it into the house but that makes great target practice for my 11 year old cousin & his BB gun. He is getting better at it because I haven't replaces much glass in the past couple years.

Now my Grandmother is gone but my Aunt lives in the house now & I still take care of the property without sinking to much of my money into it. She finnally told me this afternoon to do what I have to do to get rid of them.

As far as I know they have taken over the hole upper part of the home. It is a single story house with out access to the attic area. I have mentions a five gallon jug of gas and a match but so far only one other family member has agreed with me.

I think I would try the frequency gen first, any other way of eliminating them means you would have to go up in the attic to remove them or their carcasses if they die in there.Trust me,you dont want to go up there,if they have been up there for years,it is going to be wall to wall bat poop.Check into a frequency gen at your local hardware,or see what the dnr says to do.They do eat a zillion mosquitos a day so you really dont want to kill them, just get them out of the house.

Well would it best to find all the holes that they can use then wait till dark & spray the foam in there.

I'm araid that the Freq. thingy won't work because there is no plug ins in the house near anything that could possibly reach them.

To kill or harm them is a travesty, really. They do so much good to help keep down fly and mosquito population. Maybe find a humane way to move them out?

I really aprreciate the little critters, when I am sitting out in the backyard at sundown, and the mosquitos are the real pest, and then in the background light you can see the bats gobbling up the mosquitos.
