i am thinking about purchasing a chrome Westin Push Bar for my 1991 f150. I have been getting many conflictinig answers about how the bar is attached to the truck; drilling to frame, bumper, etc. i was wondering if anybody had any information about how it is installed?
there are many ways you CAN do it but the most common is ppl take it to a muffler shop or something similar and have them weld it up. although this is easy it is not recommended. welding to the frame is super stupid. it weakens the frame from the heat. what i suggest it make a plate that you can bolt to your frame but weld to your bars.
on the newer trucks (02-04 superduty's) they are bolted through the lip of metal that hangs down from the cab. i never thought it was a good ide but it seems to hold up!

EDIT: whoops, i thought you meant the step bars. it depends on where you get them but a lot of them either bolt to your factory bumper or bolt straight to your frame
"and the heavy duty steel uprights contour to the vehicle’s front bumper for maximum strength. The Push Bar is complete with rubber extrusions and coupling rings at all contact points to eliminate metal-to-metal contact."
sounds/looks to me it bolts to your existing bumper!
Yes, you do have to drill the bumper. It's not a hard installation, but it goes MUCH easier with 2 people (mostly 'cause the thing is way bulky, and hard to position correctly with just one person). I know it's only 4 holes with the Go Rhino push bar. I'm sure it's very similar with the Westin.
I'm wondering if that pushbar/brushgaurd is really going to be worth anything if it is only attatched to the bumper, as these bumpers are pretty flimsy.
I had the Westin push Bar on my 95 Bronco and yes, it did bolt to the bumper. These"push Bars" are more decroative than anything as SoCalDesertRider has pointed out, the bumper itself isent very strong.
