Hypermax 5 inch. Exhaust

Hello all,

I'm looking for some info. and advice on a bolt on exhaust for my 2001 Power Stoke. I found the price of the Hypermax system to be very good but the web site I found it on has little info. as dose Hypermax engineerings web page.

There are several differnt companys that build 5 inch systems and with the mass amount of diesel brain on this site I hoped that I could get some good advice on what to spend some hard cash on.

So I guess my question is to all of you who take the time to read this is, which is better 4 or 5 inch.? Is the Hypermax system agood one for the price ($475.00)? Should I consider going for something else?

I just thinck there is to much choose in all of this and I've found myself in over my head.

Oh last thing to say I want to know if I go 5 inch. will this have a 4 or 5 inch down pipe? The Hypermax I believe has a 4.

Thanks for the help.

You're really limited in the size of the downpipe by the room it has to live in. Your SuperDuty can put a 4" downpipe in there, the largest mine can handle is a 3" that flares to 3 1/2" after it clears the firewall. Unless you're going to go ballistic in building horsepower from your truck, you won't see any practical advantage to going to more than a 4" system. One of the engineers at B-D has determined that you need in excess of 475 rwhp to need more than a 4" system.
Going to a 4" system, and removing the cat and muffler are about all you need to do to your exhaust, unless you're going to invest cubic dollars.
If you, like me, live in a place that requires emissions testing, gutting the cat is another option, rather than having it surgically removed.
I hope this helps.

Well all i can say is see below. Love the exhaust. Went with no muffler sounds really good and pretty loud. With the 5 inch alum. hypermax exhaust you get the effects of lower EGT's when towing and pushing the pedal down. I also noticed better throttle response and about 1-3 more pounds of boost. I also got the downpipe. Luckily i live close enough to the hypermax location in IL that i had them do the install. If you are interested in pics let me know and i can send some to you. Thanks and good luck. Also the downpipe that hypermax offers is 3.5 inches which is more than enough for the average person.

Dave,

I guess my next question for you is can the Hypermax be installed with the factory down pipe? If not what did the down pipe cost on top of the $475 for the 5 inch system?

Lasty, I live in St. Louis MO how far is it to where you had the work done?

Thanks for the help all, hope to get this project under way soon!

Well your first question about the factory down pipe. That is yes. When you order the exhaust i think you just have to ask for a reducer. The down pipe is only $171 and i just figured since im messing around with the exhaust spend the extra money and just go with the downpipe right away so im not messing with it at a later date. Also when you call they just offered a chrome tip that looks good. Ill try to get out and take some pics. The install place is in Gilberts, IL which is about....um....maybe 40 miles away from Chicago(just a guess). My install with downpipe and exhaust and chrome tip was $1000. Am i nuts? But i think you would be happy with the exhaust. The only other choice you would have to make is about the muffler. Good luck and let me know.
