I tend to agree about the sycro's actually. As long as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have them...all should be good! However, if I do get my hands on one of the later NP435's with the sycro... One never knows...
From everything I have read...these transmissions are really tuff! Looking forward to the conversion from the T-18 to the NP435. Of course...I want the following 3rd gear that is available:
There were T-19's available with a granny first gear and without. I personally have a T-18 in my 77 2wd F-250 with well over 200,000 miles on it with no issues.

I wouldn't bother changing out your t18 for the np435 unless the t18 is already shot. They are quite comparable....you know, six of one half dozon of another.
By the way, I am not biased towards the t18, I have two Broncos with the np435 and love them.

Thanks for your comment Chris...I know what you mean about the two transmissions. My T-18 isn't "shot", but it is tired. I figured that when I go in and replace the clutch with a Centerforce dual friction, I might as well go all out and replace the trans too. Just a little preventative maintenance. According to my father (original owner of my '76 F-150 4x4) this transmission has always been kinda weird...even new. Warranty work was done, but never did solve the problem...with the hard shifting and an occasional double-clutch into 4th. I figure it better to use it as a core and get a good quality rebuilt NP435.
Glad to see that you are satisfied with your NP435's...
