I did a brief search on this question, as I figured it's been brought up before, but I didn't come up with too much (probably should look a bit deeper). Anyway, which tranny is tougher, better, lower-geared, heavier, lighter, whatever. I've heard nothing but good stuff on the 435, but I've never heard bad things about the T18, either. T18's seem more common. What are your collective opinions?
The T18 was used more in 2wd trucks, and then in the 4x4s too in the 80s. Some late 70s used the T18. I think they are great. The NP435 has a lower ratio. It was 6.69, whereas the T18 is 6.32. I have 2 T18s and both are in great shape. They aren't weak, and not much goes wrong. As will all non-synchro trannies, the first gear is a little rounded, but that is it. I haven't had any intimate experience (rebuilds) with the 435 but the T18 is good. I wanted a 435 because of the lower ratio, but have a T18 because the price was in my range. You won't go wrong with either. Ted
I have been looking to ditch my M5OD for an NP-435 or a T-18. I have a 96 F-150. I know that the slave cylinders are different, but how about the flywheel and clutch? The M5OD is a 10" clutch. Is the clutch for a T-18 bigger?

Thanks.
Good question...how about flywheel and clutch??? Same on both tranny's???
The BW T-18 is synchronized in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears - the first granny gear is unsynchronized. BW had a T-19 transmission which had a synchronized 1st gear - everything inside was exactly the same, just a synchronized 1st gear.

Fantastic! Thanks...was really looking for my next transmission using this form...and I have found it! I'm going with the NP435. Cost seems to equal the T-18, but I think the NP435 might be a better transmission for my needs.
My NP435 is non syncro first and reverse and I am sure they are all the same as far as first and reverse being non syncro, the T-18 is the same in that respect also.My NP435 uses 50 to 80 weight gear oil depending on the temperature,I have never heard of running ATF in an NP435 or any other manual tranny of this vintage although I could be misinformed.Just my two cents.
"bowties in the rearview mirror"
I had two NP435s, '78 and '86 Dodge 4x4s. Had to come to complete stop to go into first, but could shift from first to second while rolling, i.e. got the load moving. Synchro, or not?
Not. Synchro second allows you to shift into second, not out of it. Engagement needs synchronization, disengagement does not. There were reportedly two versions of the NP-435, some with Synchro first gear, but those were late in production, most were not synchro. The T-19 was a replacement for the t-18 and was full synchro. However, they are somewhat different internally besides just the first gear synchro.
The website I was looking at said the NP435 was synchronized all the way through. Sorry chap.
Question: With each transmission having a granny gear 1st gear...what would the point of needing a synchro'd 1st gear be anyways? I mean..you can't exactly downshift into it anyways if you're moving already.
