I just put a "new" rebuilt long block and a rebuilt c6 in my 71 f250. For a new engine i expected it to lay rubber, but it doesnt. It pulls my 2 horses beautifully though with out a hiccup. Is the 360 just a torquey engine with out the horsepower for a burnout, or is my timming/carb/points set wrong? ( pertronix electronic ignition, new stock replacement 2bbl carb, all else stock, but new)
Also i need new mufflers, not too loud. if i go with flow masters, will i lose any torque? ( do i need some back pressure to maintain good torque?)
thanks, rwbara.
My old 360 2bbl would screech the tires off the line, but would not fry them.
My new warmer 390 4bbl will also screech them off the line, but it's not broken in yet, so I really haven't pushed it.
My 360 would burn up the back tires up into a smouldering smoking pile of burnt rubber if I let it. Something must be set wrong on yours. Of course, I have a 4-barrel, headers, dual exhaust. They do respond well.
Pull your air cleaner off. Have someone in the cab hold the gas pedal to the floor while you look to verify that the throttle plates are wide open (engine off)
Sometimes the kooky throttle linkage only gives you 3/4 throttle.
I have driven real weak vehicles that would burn the tires with no problem. My mother's Toyota Tercel is a prime example. I can tow her car with my truck from 0-60 faster than it can get there under it's own power; but her car can burn a little rubber in 1st gear; my '69 F250 with 410 and C6 can not.
I think a lot of it has to do with the quality of the tires. The '70 F250 company truck I drive to work has some cheap $60 tires on it and I can get it to burn at least one tire on most roads. It has the same gearing and tranny as my '69, but it is only a 390. Again, my '69 has more power but won't burn the tires, but it can beat the '70 even with the secondaries on the carb disabled. I paid about $130 per tire on the '69.
