my truck is still at the repair shop, just found out i need a torque converter. anyone have any idea where i can get one for 1976 c-6 transmission (auto) that is connected to a freshly rebuilt 390. mostly stock rebuild, cam is rated at .484 lift. edelbrock intake with a holley 2bbl. the orginal torque converter is stock, as far as i know.
any suggestions greatly appreciated, getting low on funds. i rather not get one from a boneyard.never know what ya gettin.
Looks like they're still about the same price (just checked AZ site-between 89 and 102 with exchange for a C6)...that cam may have a "bit" of noticable idle lope on a 390, might want a converter with a few hundred more RPM's of stall over stock
Don't get one from the junk yard - for all the reasons you stated. But if you have to low ball it, I have one that worked fine when I junked the engine. You will have to clean it up and flush it out - but it is free. I will even deliver it the next time I go up to Mikes.
It is out of a 72 F250 390/C6 and should be the same thing. I can get pictures if you get serious about this.
BTW, converters are profit centers for most transmission shops. There is not much that can go wrong with them. But it is better for the shop to protect themselves by selling you one. Not only do they avoid a warranty issue, but also make a profit off them.
i would but, my ford is the only vehicle i have. company truck i use to get to and from work they keep close track of the mileage. plus im only going to give the repair shop until next friday to get it done, if not ill have to pay a #2 tow to get it back home. ill keep ya posted.
Yea, I was afraid of that, but no big deal. Let me talk to Mike and if I am not heading for his shop in the next few days I will bring it up to you this weekend. Please email me with your given name and a phone number, plus an address.
F2501967, I have been trying to email you since Saturday - your Yahoo account. I know you sent me your phone number but that is just backup. I seldom talk on the phone.
I can deliver the torque converter any day this week.
