Excited new PSD brethren

Hey! Friday I picked up my new used 99 F-350 4x4 x-cab dually. It rocks! I have been using synthetic in my other trucks for years, but I was wondering what a good mileage would be to change synthetic in the PSD. That is an expensive change and I don't want to over do it, but I want to take good care of this one as I am planning on keeping it a while. Also, I have 4:10 gears and it runs kind of high RPM's on the highway and I was wondering if I went to a taller tire if it would help fuel economy or if the extra drag would counter the effect of the taller tires. If any one has done this, tire size and results would be appreciated. Thanks,

John

My truck is also geared with 4.10's, and I have 35" tires. At 70 mph I'm turning 2000 rpm, where the best fuel mileage is.
I don't have any answers for you on synthetic oil, but someone else will be along shortly.
Congratulations on the new (to you) truck.

So what kind if mileage are you getting with the 35's? My first tank was all highway and I got just a shade under 14. Thanks for the info.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-May-02 AT 02:29 AM (EST)]TKONO,

I can only respond by parroting answers I got when I asked that same question just after I bought my truck. I was told that, particularly if the engine's good and tight without any noticeable leaks, it should be fine to go ahead and change to a synthetic now if you want to. You know that a synth is gonna show you any oil leaks you didn't know you had, but hey, it's a 'Stroke! These things don't leak, do they?? Congrats on the new ride, Man!

Oh, and a work buddy of mine just bought what sounds like exactly the same rig you've got, and he's getting right at 15mpg, so you're probably right at par for the course.

Hey Rotorhead, hows that LuK SMFW holding up for you? Also how many miles on it? I have put 5 or 6 of them in my work trucks, and they seem to be holding up with no problems except for the incredibly soft clutch pedal. Just wondering how much abuse those things are good for.

I'm almost afraid to admit how good my mileage is, people quite often think I'm exaggerating, or incapable of calculating it. (Neither is true.) Lately, around town, which is 50/50 highway/city, I've been getting 17, and on the freeway, at 2000 rpm, I've gotten 19.3 on winter fuel. I've heard of other trucks getting as good or better, but they typically have stock tires, and weigh considerably less. For a lifted 4X4 CrewCab with AT, I don't think many do as well.
I know I drive like I want to get good mileage, and that has something to do with it, but some trucks just seem to get better mileage than others. If someone could figure out why, they'd make a bejillion bucks, eh?

I would'nt call that too unrealistic, I have a friend that had a 97 F-350 4x4 reg. cab srw with 35x12.50's and his mileage got better with the taller tires. He never calculated, but he was logging less miles for distance travelled, and getting more miles to each tank as well. I just thought it might be a fluke. I would like to try something like that with my truck, but it wont be cheap since it's a dually. I did notice that my first tank, all highway, 2400 rpm's, no hard starts, no towing and my second tank which has been a lot of towing and to the floor from the stoplight a lot are only different by about 20 miles. Hmmmmmmmmmm.... Well, thanks for the info,

John
