hello yall i got a 89 f250 4x4 with a 7.3 ,with an auto trans..i have had it a year or so it has 235000+ miles on it. the porblem im haveing is there is a loud ticking sound comeing from the left top side of the motor .it leaks oil bad there to.(no other oil leaks on the motor) it has duel exsaust and there is a poping sound in that pipe. it also blowes smoke (white) out of that side when started.it will miss realy bad if you let it sit 3-4days. on the left side of the motor. any help would be greatfull thanks kavin
You say left top, huh. Like under a valve cover? Is the oil leak at the valve cover also? Maybe you have a bent pushrod or a burnt exhaust valve. Does it ever smooth out?
yes it sounds like it is under the valve cover . the oil is comeing from the valve cover also.sometimes when it warms up it will smoth out a little. but the poping sound the exaust makes is constant. if it is a valve does it cost a lot to fix one? can it be done by a home mec. i know gas motors but not diesel. or should i take it to a shop? thanks
feel around the back of the valve cover ,maybe the push rod is trying to escape thru the valve cover <hope not>.mine did the same thing and i found the end of the push rod protruding out of it.the valve was not working on that clyinder
Were you able to fix it relatively easily? I'm thinking about buying one doing a similar thing, but just a little lifter noise and a "poot-poot-poot" at the exhaust. Truck seems to run good with lots of power.
