Rear end knocking

ok,Now that I got the front end fixed(Inner Tie rod had 1/2" of play in the ball joint for the Pitman arm.....almost catastrophic) I can move on to other problems. When I put the truck into gear;especially Reverse;I get a loud knocking noise.....Well I climbed under there(Parking brake on,trans in N)and moved the drive shaft.Zero play in U joints but the rear end was very sloppy and I could make it knock by hand.I got a good 1/8 turn if not more out of the drive shaft and Could see the yoke on the rear end move out a good 1/8th inch when I moved it one direction.Would this be repairable or should I just look for another axle?It is a 8.8 with open 355soh,and it also has 277K on the truck with nothing touched other than a new 300I6.Go blue oval.

You can not repair something that worn. The gears will have a very uneven wear pattern now due to the bad pinion bearings. If you installed new bearings the wear pattern being off would cause the gear howl very loud and would not last long.

Its best to rebuild it or replace the rear axle.

They sell the rebuild kits and it will have what you need. Just buy the gears and a rebuild kit and you should be good to go as long as you know how to set up the gears correctly.

thanks again. One last question.Should I Stick with 355s or go with something higher(3.27 or 2.73) since I have a C6 which ain't got Overdrive......RPMs are a little high for my likings on the highway. One downside would be I would have to buy 2 kits since it is a 4x4 but if I can get better Fuel Milage and top end speed without screaming the engine I will do it.

If you are running stock tires then 3.25 gears would be okay. You loose about 200plus ftlbs of torque multiplier when going from 3.55 to 3.25. In my case when looking into this my rpms would have dropped I think around 300rpm or so. There are plenty os charts out there to help you calculate your rpm with the different gear ratios. If you do a lot of towing or hauling it may hurt you.

Thats the thing.Right now the truck has 31s on it and I want to go bigger in the future(maybe up to 38s.....35 for sure)I won't be doing any hauling(Got a F350 Crewcab Dually) or towing unless it is a stuck bowtie of goat......and then I might just drive home and get my unsticker......The deuce and a half.

Do you go 4wheelen with this rig?
What has been the RPM's and Gas milage with the 3.55 gears?

With the consideration of the possibilities of going to bigger tires, I personaly would not go higher on the gears. With that in mind, going to something like(3.27 or 2.73) and bigger tires you might not be able to get it out of first or second, even at highway speeds, especially going up hill. A lot of guys go lower on thier gears, putting anywhere from 3.73 to 4.88 gears on thier 4x4 rigs. And sometimes 5.13 gears, depending on driver. Granted the milage starts going down with these kind of gears. The tire size seems to help balance this out somewhat. I ran 4.10 gears with 33" tires for several years. At 75 MPH my tach was at 2500. I just had to rebuild my rear-end several weeks ago, and put in 4.56 gears, and the same size tire(33"). I haven't re-calibrated my speedo yet, will do it today, but I know the tach has changed along with gear change, roughly up to about 2750 RPM's. But I do plan on putting on larger tires on my rig. At least 35", maybe even 37" tires, and by doing so will bring my tach and milage down to about normal with the new gears that I now have(4.56).

Sorry for long post. Hope it helps

I might do a little mud slingin but not a lot.In the 3 years I have had the deuce and a half I have been out muddin about 8 times.and 3 of those times was true mudding. The others were a side effect of going fishing in a place vehicles were not ment to go.....ok,I was too lazy to drag my fishing gear 200 yards from the road though the woods.
