How much play is too much play on power steering shaft..

got the top of engine blown out (doing my major up grade deal ) and when i took the alternator bracket off i grabbed the PS pump pulley and it moved a bit..

so i got every thing settled down and went looking.

I can move the pulley a good 1/8" in and out.. the truck has 170K and and guess it OEM from new in 2003.

anything special in getting it off and back on??

That slop in and out, along with the almost clicking sound it makes is normal. I wouldn't worry about it because a new one will do the same thing. I would go ahead and change out the high pressure hose on the pump though. Those things tend to fail and blow out the side of the pump at a less than optimal time.

But if you want to change it just because, you'll need a power steering pump remover / installer tool It's cheap and just has a bolt to thread in the middle and some pieces that can either grab the pulley and yank it off, or press the pulley back on.

thats good to know.. it is not making any unusual noises and when driving, or turning at slow or regular speed there is no whining noise or pulsation of the wheel at all. I did change out the fluid with mercon 5 recently. (did the method on youtube using the truck running and turning steering wheel back and forth and pumping brakes.)

which hose is the high pressure one.. i have not really looks at the pump. I did see one coming off the area up near the brake master cylinder.

any picture appreciated.

The high pressure line is the one coming out the side of the pump with the swivel connection.

It's easy to see, and even easier to change if you get to do it in the comfort of your own place when the engine isn't piping hot.

I did check it out.. looks OK but with 170K miles it not to bad cost wise, like 20 bucks at Rock auto for the Gates brand.

plus i have the truck kneeling now so it much easier to get in down there.

thanks for the tip.

you should see the back.. its up on 4 - 2x10s so the tailgate is armpit high..

PS just called autozone and they carry it for 18 bucks.. with lifetime warranty.. SCORRRRE
