Oil pump shaft

Just put the oil pump on the 302. But I have about 1/16" to 1/8" of play up and down with the pump shaft.

Is this normal or should the shaft be tight up and down after the pump is torqued down?

Is it possible the end of the shaft has worn down causing the slop, even if it looked fine?

This is the original shaft with a new pump. I got tired of waiting for the back ordered shaft to arrive so I thought I would slap this one back in. This MAY be the "knock/rattle" I was having because I could hear it through the distributor. That's why I replaced the distributor.

Has anyone installed their pump and noticed this as well?
I'll wait to slap the pan on until I find out for sure.

Thanks!

Where'd you order the shaft from? I've ordered parts from Summit late on a friday, and they show up to my house saturday at noon. Of course overnight shipping runs about $12 more.

I see Summit has two FRPP shafts. One is not for EEC-IV and the other is. Does anyone know what the difference is? Is it possible my old is the wrong one?

I just did this install. There is supposedly a difference between the two shafts but I don't know exactly what it is. Call a tech line or a speed shop. It might be wise to spend an extra couple of bucks to get a hardened pump shaft. There are several different companies selling them. At $16 it's cheap insurance.

I should get the new FRPP shaft by Thursday. I just recieved my pump primer. The FRPP shaft is a stronger one than stock, it's made of Chromemoly Steel. I ordered it from Summit for $19.
Thanks!
