1979 Ford F250 Ranger, 400 CID motor and the starter is staying engaged. We have changed the bell housing because of a crack. We have changed the starter, solenoid, and the keyswitch to no avail. The bell housing maybe a 1980, not sure.
Can anyone shed light on why the starter is staying engaged.
Dude,
Can you disengage the starter with a screwdriver. You will have to try this. When you get the starter disengaged try and notice if the drive gear retracts all the way. There is a spring that pulls the drive starter back. This may be broken. I doubt it, though. Chances are, your new bell housing is the incorrect size or shimmed improperly. Do you have the metal dust cover between the bell housing and motor? If not, dissassemble, install the dust cover and try it again. If this in not the case, you will have to shim the starter. This is a tricky and unsure thing, to say the least. My guess is, you will have to shim the starter crooked, to angle the drive gear away from the flywheel. I would personally get the correct bell housing and repair the problem correctly.
Good Luck,

try another solenoid, i put a brand new one on my truck and the starter would not shut off. a little rap w/ a hammer and it stopped . i put another new one on and it worked fine.
