460 ring gear problem

460 ring gear problem
hi, i got a 87 f350,460,4spd its also has a pto drive. I have a problem that keeps reacuring. I have the correct ring gear for the motor and the correct starter. When the starter is fully engaged the teeth do not fully mesh together. Almost as if the starter is to far away from the ring gear. Im wondering if there is different bell housings that will bolt to the tranny, the motor that will bring them together farther. I have no clue if the bell housing has been changed prior to me owning it.

Problems like this are rare with Fords. Much more common with GMs.
The only thing I can think of is that something is stopping the starter from fully engaging. Without being able to see what's actually happening, it's very hard to diagnose.

I have a 93 460 and a 5 speed, I too am having the same problem. I replaced the ring gear and starter drive and still looks like it is about a 16th of an inch too far away from each other. The ring gear teeth are slowly being worn away.

it chewed the new ring gear out of it with in 3 months. Would a 351m bell housing cause such a problem. i heard there might be different depths with a 351m swap to a 460. It shouldnt be a different bell housing but i have no clue what is up with it.
