Just returned from the north Arkansas ozarks with a 600 grizzly atv on a small trailer,, a 400 Kodiak atv in the truck bed, a self propelled snapper mower and numerous other things.Coming back home driving 75-80 thru some big hills etc, i checked and got 14.2 mpg!Who says performance mods doesnt help with mileage.
I've said it before, but I'm very pleased with the mileage "ETon", my v10-equipped 2003 E350, gets.
I just got back from a 2300 mile trip down to the Gulf Coast in Alabama. This "jaunt" was driven straight through, just stopping for gas and restrooms; 16 hours down, spend some time with my parents, then 18 hours back (side trip through New Orleans on the way back...).
Bottom line, I got 15.1 mpg on the highway while doing 72.8 mph.
I've tried and tried, but I can't quite hit that 16 MPG mark. 15.9 on the highway is the best I can do, but it's pretty consistent. I can average 14 city/hwy if I can keep my foot out of it, but that rarely happens.
I'm still trying to hit the magic 14. 2001 F250XL SC, V10, 5-Speed, 3.73 NLS. Last tank was 13.76 mpg combined city/hwy. About 20 miles of that was towing a 19 ft bass boat and another 36 miles was towing a 5000 lb cargo trailer. I am really keeping my foot out of it on this tank of gas to see if I can get it above 14 mpg. Pretty pleased with 13.76 thouigh.
I just took my first hwy trip this weekend to see the Red Sox Rangers series. The trip computer is way off. I manualy calculated the mpg and I was in the 14.5 range. I rode it till the computer said I had 8 miles and my 29 gallon tank only held 24. Is there a way for the computer to be more realistic?

What modifications have you done? I am looking at doing a few. Thanks
I get 13 to 14 mpg emty with a 2000 F350 2X4 DRW 4.30 gears stock 215 tires if I keep my foot out of it. I bought the truck to pull my 5th wheel not to race down the interstate. Pulling mileage is 7 to 8 at 65 with 15k 5th wheel in tow. the only mod so far is a K&N filter. Ordered a Banks Stinger exhaust last week haven't received it yet, hope it gives more low end power and maybe a little mpg.
The best I can get on the highway empty is 13-14 MPG... Daily driving gets 11 MPG. Towing the travel trailer nets me 9 MPG.
Of course I have every "bad for mileage" option I could get:
- V-10 (thirsty)
- Crew Cab long bed (heavy)
- 4x4 (heavy & extra parts turning)
- Camper/tow/off-road packages & big mirrors (heavy, heavy, heavy, drag)
- 4.30 limited slip gears in the pumpkin (more grunt, less mileage)
- Big right foot and not afraid to use it!
If I want mileage without taking anything with me I take my wife's VW Jetta. If I want to actually carry/tow something I take my Big Red Truck! OBTW, I think the Jetta will fit in Big Red's bed...
