I have a 83 F150 4x4 with an inline 6, 300. This truck is great!
I had a problem with this truck, it was backfiring and hard starting. So I thought it was the Carb, played with the choke for a week or so till I got stranded. I replace the Carb with a (Tomco) and the plugs, rotor & cap. After all that found out the problem was the ingnition module.
Any way ever since then the truck runs rough lacks power and has even overheated once, not to the point of complete steam. I have tried to set the idle and the mixture with a tach. Played with the timing and still have the same problems. Its even worst when it rains. I have taken the vacuum line off the distrubutor and found no vacuum. So I don't know if this is correct or not.
But before the replaced parts and problem this truck ran fine.
Well the old carb was returned for the core charge. I wish I still had it. I keep wondering if the dizzy needs to be replaced.
When I bought this truck last summer, it was pretty much rebuilt, except for a few things. But the other owner took all the emisions out of it. And capped off alot of lines. So I really don't know if all the vacuum lines are there or not. The truck still has the label for them but its hard to tell whats what, by the diagram.
Hello hows it going,
I had a similar problem on my 1983 F250 and what I found wrong with mine was the carburetor the parts store sold me was the wrong one they sold me a carburetor calibrated for a non-emission application where I needed the emission calibrated one. Once I changed it It ran great.
Since I read your post about the previous owner pulling the emissions off the vehicle he may have changed the carburetor also to a non-emission rated carburetor in the crossover. When you purchased your new carb from the parts store they probably sold you what originally came with the truck which would of had the emissions. Which would of shown that on there computer. When ordering parts. Hope this helps your problem.
