351 valve clearance

351M, Need Help! My Chilton repair & tune-up guide reads[ Be sure that the fulcrum seat base is seated in its slot, tighten to 18-24 ft. lb. Check valve clearance]. Its the valve clearance and which method to used that Im lost on. I have hydraulic lifters and the book show two method on adjustment but on a different hydraulic rocker setup and there no valve clearance spec on the 351m in the spec section. should I hold the valve hydraulic lifter in the fully collapsed position, than check the clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem tip and whats the clearance, thanks

Basically there is no ready adjustment on these engines. You can check the geometry by twisting the push rod as you tighten the bolt. As soon as you feel all the slack is taken up note the position of your ratchet. It should turn about 3/4 to 1 1/4 more turns before you get your torque spec. This ensures you have a proper amount of preload on the lifter. You must be sure the lifter is on the base circle of the cam when doing this.
