GIONG CRAZYYY help me select a cam! pls

still debating wich cam to use to go in my truck ( 1989 F150 reg cab 5 speed short box ) with the new 5.0HO carbed engine

the E303 cam ( notes : not good for a truck )

the 35-422-8 Comp Cam ( notes : too much lift needs new PR and few other things)

The
COMP Cams 35-421-8 ( PErfect duration PErfect LIft) but notes says : FOR ENGINES THAT DID NOT COME FROM FACTORY WITH ROLLER CAM

this cam the 35-349-8 (is perfect !!!! ) but not for Carbed engines
LSA need to be lower fr CArbed engine ( a comp cam tech told me that )

I am both capable and willing to help you select a cam, but PLEASE don't make ME go find catalogs and look up specs!

Get the intake and exhaust duration @ .050 numbers along with the lobe center angle. Post that info here and I will help you. I am headed out for a wedding shortly, but I expect to be back online late tonight or in the morning.

Okay great. These look like good possible selections, but I need still more info. The info I need is:

What gear ratio?
What tire size?
What transmission?
What will you be using the truck for, towing, stop light to stop light?
Tell me about your exhaust system, stock? dual exhaust? Headers?

I would give my info and intentions of use to a comp tech and let him give you an idea. I think the lift and dur. figures on the other cam are pretty good, but this might allow you to run a diff. LSA. I'm not sure why the comp tech told you you needed a smaller LSA to start with, though. I think that the comp. needs the LSA of 114. If it weren't for the comp. compatable thing, your cam choices would be a lot broader. What was the original set -up that you are replacing with this motor?

I think that's a mistake for your usage. That's just too much cam, plus it is a symmetrical grind. Unless you have headers and a VERY free flowing exhaust, you would benefit from more duration and lift on the exhaust side. Most Ford engines respond well to this, especially with a restrictive exhaust system.

I would recommend the Comp 35-349-8. It won't have too much intake duration and the extra exhaust will work well. Remember, this is a relatively small displacement engine. If it had more cubes, specifically with more stroke, you could get by with 220 @ .050, but it will just not have enough on the low end for your purposes.

The most common mistake in cam selection is giving into too much cam. The thinking is typically; "if a little bit is good then a bunch must be better."

Don't get carried away. You will regret it. If you insist on more cam, go with the other Comp cam with the split duration.

I have the E-cam in my 88 5.0 Mustang. It makes good power from 2500 to about 6000rpm. Not really good for the heavy truck.
Go here and fill out the info and get the recommendation from the experts!!!
