I am trying to remove my starter on a 96 AWD, I removed the bolts on the starter and drive shaft, but cannot get the drive shaft to move, I talked to a ford mechanic and he stated to hit the front drive shaft after the bolts are romved, not doing a thing, looking for answers to removing it, so I can replace the starter, thanks
Sounds like the two flange surfaces are just stuck together. Once the bolts are out, just tap the connection and it should separate. Be sure to mark the flanges beforehand so they will go back the same way.
Sorry to say, there is not sufficient room to actually remove the front shaft, all you can do is push it as far out of the way as you can. To actually drop the shaft, according to the Ford manual, you have to remove the upper u-joint. You can get the starter out with the driveshaft moved out of the way, but it is a VERY close fit. You need to tip the starter upright and pull it down and out. Lots of wiggling involved as I recall.
