I've even had new pumps that moaned. Just about every older ford truck I've heard running will moan a bit when you turn the wheel.
Do check for air in the system. You could even be syphoning air into the system if there is a leak in the lines.
Chilton's manual details how to refill a system after a new pump install. Follow it to the letter and that may resolve the problem.
Yeah, quite a bit once it starts chipring or squealing. I'm not talking about that simple moan of the pump turning it around. I'm talking about that high-pitched chirp or squeal. That gets on my nerves. Once it does it, the wheel doesn't want to move. This only happens at idle while I'm sitting still. It's never done it going down the road. The belt is slipping. I've noticed that. But, is the pump locking up or do I just need to replace and retighten the belt?
If you know the belt is slipping, don't go any further until that problem is resolved.
BTW- Observing proper belt tension is a good thing to do. Don't tighten till it's like a steel rod, you'll wear bearing prematurely at the least.
Having "plenty of fluid" may not be enough. Get a Haynes or Chilton's manual, read-up on air bleeding the system.
Right on KenB. I should have tightened it a long time ago. I'll get a new belt this weekend and get it on there. To be honest with you, the only reason that I haven't done it yet is because it's a gald-darn pain!! lol.
