Has anyone with a Powerstroke experienced a problem with the power steering not working when the truck is stopped and the brake is applied?
I've owned my truck since new and it has always done this, but at 37k miles it began having the same problem when stopped even with no brake applied.
My local Ford dealer has replaced every component in the steering including: power steering pump, steering box, and brake booster despite telling me that this issue was normal. After changing the compents at 37k miles it went back to only having the problem with the brakes applied. Now, at 40k miles it has gone back to no power steering function when the truck is stopped. The dealer says that the problem with the brakes applied is normal, and they say that there is nothing they can do to fix it.
Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any fixes? Aftermarket?
One of the guys at work has the same problem with his 2000 I replaced everything and it still does it. We were thinking of putting on a smaller pulley on the pump because if we speed up the engine the steering works OK. But we sold the truck and the new owner is picking it up on monday. There was a lot of talk on the diesel stop about it.
Search for power steering problems there threads on it. Mine 01, my buddies 01, and a buddies from works 00, all do the same thing. A ford tech said its because the hydro boost takes away from the steering pressure when the brakes are applied, i think its BS though.
Hossy you were given correct info. The power brakes work off of hydraulic pressure (hydro boost brakes) as opposed to vacuum assisted brakes like cars use. The pump could be getting weak, they have had some go bad early.
1999-2004 SUPER DUTY F-SERIES/EXCURSION - HIGH STEERING EFFORT
SOME 1999-2004 SUPER DUTY F-SERIES AND 2000-2004 EXCURSION VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT INCREASED STEERING EFFORTS AT VERY LOW SPEEDS OR WHEN STOPPED WITH THE BRAKES APPLIED. CUSTOMERS MAY PERCEIVE THIS AS HIGH STEERING EFFORT. PLEASE REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 211-00 FOR STEERING WHEEL TURNING RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS. INCREASED STEERING EFFORT AT LOW SPEED OR WHILE STOPPED IS A NORMAL CONDITION WITH HYDROBOOST OR VACUUM OPERATED BRAKES, THEREFORE NO SERVICE ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN.
Don't know if theres one for a psd but there are companys that make pumps with more presure down low. Alot of the rock crawler guys use these. I'll look in some back issuse of 4by mags. One of them was upgrading the steering on their ultimate superduty.

You could get a AGR Performance, Ford Super Pump #877257 for $229.
