ok, who thinks the 8.8 will hold up behind a 460 . both are stock, the tranny is a zf 5 speed. let me kno what you think. i do all my offroading on teh beach. and i play on constructing a traction bar to eliminate wheel hop
With enough torque you can spin the center section on the axle tubes, seen a friend do that to a 8.8 behind a 4.6L F150. The 8.8 is a good axle, with upgraded shafts, maybe full float it, and fully welded center section it would hold up.... find a 10.25... direct swap and built to hold the 460.
Are we talking about a full size bronco here ? That is getting a 460 swapped in ? The 8.8 will probably live for a while, but with so many 9inchers out there cheap, or Dana 60s in old 2wds if you have 3/4 ton truck, it ( the 8.8 ) certainly wouldn't be my first choice. DF, @ his Dad's
The 8.8 would last for a while but it would eventually crap the bed. There's a reason Ford did not put these axles behind 460-equipped trucks. I'd go for the 10.25 too.
The reason is probably weight capacity as well as engine power since it's a semi floater.
With a few mods to the 8.8 (full floater kit, c-clip eliminator, good differential and new shafts...it would handle well over 500hp. Can also weld the axle tubes and put on a stronger diff cover with bearing stud supports.
Plus the 8.8 has the speedometer/ABS in the 92-96 and 87-91 just has ABS in the 8.8.
yea, i dont really tow anything. i do have an 10.25 rear sittin in my yard, but i cant use my wheels and i ust got new tires. so i think that i'm gonna try and make the 8.8 last and do new axles and a locker. hopefully that will work. but who knows.
by the way, what is a truss that you speak of? i killed the spider gears once because of axle wrap, so i was gonna do the traction bar to eliminate that.
I assume your going to be doing burnouts with this new found power from the 460.. Loss of traction breaks things as does too much traction on a weak axle. I wouldn't lock the axle, your going to shred it. A truss is a piece of metal that runs from one end of the axle tube up over the diff then to the other end of the tube fully welded along the way. This makes the axle more rigid. The only 1/2 ton axle i can see holding up for a good while behind a 460, especially through burnouts is a 35 or 40 spline 9".
lol, i love brunouts, but at teh same time i'm going to try and save this axle. i figured eliminating axle wrap would help alot. i already broke the 8.8 once w/ the 302. lol. but that was because the axle wraped. if i find a 9 inch, i will definently swap it in. but if i can mod my 8.8 for the same amount and have it be stronger then the stock 9". i'm gonna do that. plus i can get a e-locker for the 8.8 so thats a plus. since i dont want to do a detroit.
You will need new wheels which you will have to buy anyway after you break that 8.8 and decide to upgrade to an 8 lug axle. I've broken a 9" behind a built 400 and I don't do anything (that) irresponsible. The 460 is a mother! It's pay now or pay later.
