Hello I am in the UK looking for help with a problem on my 1988 Econoline 4.9 straight six . The vehicle has been unused for a time and though I can get it to start as soon as it reaches working tempersture it cuts out.
I believe its a thermistor/thermacouple problem re as soon as the "choke" finishes it stops.
ideas on the position of the thermacouple and/or a test to check it would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds more like your choke is working fine BUT the idle and high speed circuits are at least partially clogged(varnished from sitting ) causing an overly lean condition causing the cut out. When the choke is closed the engine will pull suction thru those circuits helping flow but as the choke opens less vacuum is applied and the mixture will lean out.
Pull the carburetor and overhaul. Make sure you use red locktite on the base to body bolts as they have a nasty tendency to loosen up.
Concur with lifted88bronco on the bad idle air control sensor on top of the throttle body. Pull it off and clean it with carb cleaner or Injector cleaner and a toothbrush. Re-install.

I want to get this thing straight.
Do you mean that you can start the vehicle while it is cold and it will IDLE but as soon as the engine reaches its working temperature then the engine dies?
And
Do you also mean that you can immediately start the vehicle after it dies? OR
Do you have to wait to let the engine cool down first before you can start it again?
How long does it take for the engine to die when you first started it and while at IDLE?
What kind of Ignition System do you have? Duraspark II, Duraspark III, TFI IV?
Hello I will try and clarify ( and avoid "englishisms !")
The vehicle will start idle and rev when cold
It will not start again until it cools down
It takes the engine about 5-10 minutes for the engine to stop depending on outside temperature ie longer when its cold and for a shorter time when its warmer
I am not sure on the ignition system type where will it show it ?
I am wondering if I am over complicating the problem and it may just be a fuel starvation issue so I have ordered a filter and will change that
Many thanks for your time John
Sorry for the confusion we may share the same language but its amazing how different terms can confuse !!
Should I have said cold start device ?
I will clean the sensor and change the fuel filter ( see other thread )
Just like to compliment all who have looked and replied it feels good that people across an ocean and thousands of miles away take an interest
I will give a shout on how I get on it will be weekend before I have time
Cheers John
