Wow,Our local fishing charters have been battling the commercial fishing companies here in michigan ever since the commercial guys got booted out of their netting areas two or three years ago by the indians, now they are setting their nets in all the favorite fishing spots along lake Huron and they have all the charter captains up in arms. Now I was just reading the paper today, and one of these commercial companies has opened their own fish outlet and they are selling walleye for $7.50lb.And lake trout for $4.50lb.The funny thing is their license from the gov is a so called research permit and limited to whitefish.Something smells fishy.I wish I could sell walleye for $7.50lb.but I cant cause the same gov regulations say I cant sell fish!Another case of money wins over common sense.Another funny thing is,this so called research permit is for 10,000lbs of fish, but yet these companies are alloted 100,000lbs EACH!Like I said, something sure is fishy!!!
dang $7.50lb for walleye. i dont think u'd see me paying it. i just go out in the boat and catch the walleye....seems to taste better caught, filleted, grilled, and eatin in the same day.
That's a crazy high price for walleye. I can only catch fish like grouper, red snapper, cobia, mahi mahi, king mackeral, flounder, and pompano. No walleye here.

from your lips to God's ears!! i agree 100% there is nothing like eating the fish you catch yourself... and um thanks KING and RICE H8R now youve got those little hairs on the back of my neck standing up getting me itching to run down and pick up my boat get her "Summerized" and get out there fishing again!!!
Oh and by the way i hear that theres great Walleye fishing on the Hudson River up around Albany way in NY state
You should have been at the court hearing, what a joke,I was asked to attend by a local charter captain, who on advice from his team of lawyers, was asking all the local fishermen to come to the hearing.
The DNR of course is on the side with the money, the commecial fisheries,
The DNR states that we as fishermen have no right to claim these fishing hot spots,WHAT?We are not the ones claiming the spots,it is these fisheries that leave there nets there for MONTHS at a time.
The license that the DNR issuses a commercial fishery is for x amount of miles from their home port.Because they have to come way down here they are out of their legal area. That is why they are given these research permits?
They are supposed to place their nets on this date and have them out by this date, but funny thing is nobody enforces the date of removal and the nets stay for long periods after. What gets me is the arrogance of these fisheries to put an ad in the local paper selling fish that dont fall under their permit!Every day you see another ad in the paper where another guy is selling his boat and getting out of the charter biz.Sad,Just like the farmers, dump on the little guy,and let commecialism take over.
It's pretty sad how the fisheries are managed on Lake Huron.
I live on the North shore, and between the Americans, Canadians, and the Natives, it seems that everyone feels they deserve first crack at the resource. Aside from an early spring smelt run and some open water salmon, there isnt much sport fishing to be had here anymore.
I dont feel that I have any more right than anyone else,I have fished lake Huron for 25yrs,and always abide be the laws,I only keep what I eat,and respect size and amount limits, this past year was the worst year I have ever had, multiple days without even so much as a knockoff, sport fishing is dieing, charter fishing is dieing, but yet those nets are still out there.I wonder how long it will be before these commercial fisheries turn on the DNR and blame them for poor fish management,The river I live close to used to be famous all over michigan for the salmon runs,This past run was a joke,I wasted my time and froze my butt off and did not get a single salmon. In years past, you had to get to the river quick to get a spot to fish because there were so many guys trying, well I counted six guys over a three day period!
